Robert and Brenda Campbell

Return on Investment, or ROI, is one of the fundamental principles in business. What results will my investments of time, money and resources bring?

Robert and Brenda Campbell are a part of a growing number of Christians who subscribe to a different formula: ROKI, or Return on Kingdom Investment.

"There are three basic ways people can use money," says Robert. "For personal lifestyle, for our children's inheritances and for charitable giving. The question is, are we going to invest in things that have eternal or temporary rewards?"

For the Campbells, the answer is obvious. They believe that everything they have is from God, and that they've been entrusted with material blessings to help others know about Christ – eternal investment returns.

Today, they combine this philosophy with another: the multiplication effect. For example, Robert and Brenda support America's Family Coaches, a national ministry that trains couples, small groups and local churches to build healthy marriages and prevent divorce. The result is a multiplication of the effectiveness of their gifts.

In 1996, Robert and Brenda chose to manage their giving through NCF. Their NCF Giving Fund provides them the ability to make a gift in one calendar year and then recommend grants from the Fund later, thereby separating tax decisions from charitable decisions. They also like the ability to gift appreciated stock to NCF, who then sells it for them. This enables the Campbells to give to multiple ministries and individuals that might not be set up to accept stock.

"Early on, I would categorize our giving as a shotgun approach – all over the board," says Robert, "but over time, it's become more focused. We give to a fewer number of ministries but to those that are having a significant impact in God's Kingdom."

Multiplication. Investment in the Kingdom. That's what it's all about.
