| In the late 1970s, an "explosion" occurred in the Pursell family. Not a population explosion, but a spiritual one. Between 1976 and 1978 the entire family – father, mother, and three children – all became Christians. "It changed everything," says father Jim Pursell. "It pulled us closer together and gave us a new purpose in life." One of the things that changed was their attention to giving. "God said I not only want you, I want your business, too," adds Jim. The Pursells had always given to various charities, but it was mostly out of habit. "Our discipline to give has turned into a desire to give," says son David. "That's neat, because God is more concerned about our heart than the amount. I always try to examine myself and make sure that my heart is right." Jim Pursell starting working with NCF many years ago, and has involved his whole family in the stewardship process from the beginning. "NCF takes the time pressure out of giving," says Jim. "When we have extra income, we can put it in one of our NCF Funds and get the tax deduction. Then we can give it to charities later, when the time is right. This affords us tremendous flexibility. We do most of their transactions on-line." The Pursells say they could have set up their own foundation to handle their charitable giving, but that would have cost them thousands of dollars more. NCF is more efficient, less expensive, and offers tremendous support. "NCF has been great," adds daughter Chris. "They've got a system for keeping our giving anonymous, which helps us keep our hearts pure. I'd recommend NCF to anyone who wants to learn to give more strategically and more generously." The Pursells over the years have become involved in many different ministries. "Much has been given to us, and much is expected," says Jim. "I've enjoyed being able to give more. It's catching." | | |
